Fertility

Choosing to start trying for a baby is a very special time of life, but if nothing happens it can become stressful and upsetting.  A trip to the GP can sometimes identify a cause, but in over 30% of cases infertility is unexplained.

Acupuncture is a popular choice for helping with explained and unexplained fertility.

Research has found that acupuncture can:

  • regulate fertility hormones - stress and other factors can cause hormonal imbalances that can negatively impact fertility. (Ng 2008, Huang 2008, Lim 2010, Stener-Victorin 2010)

  • increase blood flow to the ovaries enhancing the environment in which ovarian follicles develop. (Stener-Victorin 2006, Lim 2010)

  • increase blood flow to the uterus improving the thickness of the endometrial lining and increasing the chances of embryo implantation. (Stener-Victorin 1996, Huang 2008),

  • help polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) one of the most common causes of infertility. It balances hormones, reduces ovarian cysts, stimulates ovulation, and regulates the menstrual cycle in women with PCOS (Stener-Victorin 2000, 2008, 2009, Zhang 2009). It may also help with other symptoms like obesity and anorexia (Lim 2010).

  • increase egg production (Jin 2009) and improving the egg quality (Chen 2009), which could increase the chance of fertilisation.

  • enhance luteal function (Huang 2009)
