Menstrual pain, PMS and cycle regulation

Many women suffer from pre-menstrual symptoms, but 2-10% of women are affected severely disrupting their daily lives’.

Symptoms, both physical and mental, include: depression, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, poor concentration, fatigue, increased appetite and cravings, poor sleep, poor coordination, headaches, aches, swelling/bloating/weight gain, cramps, and breast tenderness.

Acupuncture may help to reduce PMS symptoms by:

  • increasing relaxation and reducing tension (Samuels 2008). Acupuncture can alter the brain’s mood chemistry by reducing serotonin levels (Zhou 2008)

  • helping to combat negative mood states – by increasing endorphins (Han, 2004) and neuropeptide Y levels (Lee 2009)

  • helping reduce pain – by increasing levels of serotonin and noradrenaline (Wang 2005), and stimulating nerves to release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors (Pomeranz 1987, Zhao 2008)

  • regulating the hormones in the menstrual cycle - Acupuncture promotes the release of chemicals in the brain (beta-endorphin), which regulates the hormones in the menstrual cycle including oestrogen and progesterone. (Anderson 2007).
