Menopause
During the menopause the change in hormones, particularly oestrogen, can cause symptoms such as - hot flushes, night sweats, disturbed sleep, tiredness, mood swings and forgetfulness – to name a few! (Freeman 2007; Melby 2005, Melby 2005; Bachmann 1999).
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most common conventional medical treatment. Acupuncture has been found to be at least as effective, and sometimes superior to hormone drug treatment, but has no adverse side effects.
Acupuncture may help reduce symptoms by:
increasing relaxation and reducing tension (Samuels 2008). Acupuncture can alter the brain's mood chemistry, reducing serotonin levels(Zhou 2008)
help to combat negative affective states - by increasing endorphins (Han, 2004) and neuropeptide Y levels (Lee 2009),
deactivate the 'analytical' brain, which is responsible for insomnia and anxiety (Hui 2010).
For hot flushes – the research is inconclusive - some research is positive, some negative..
